Route. 

transitive verb

1 : to send by a selected route : direct was routed along the scenic shore road
2 : to divert in a specified direction

Then Route is the way to find a path between at least two points.  Imagine that you have to look for specif address, you will get idea where it is by the zip code. But along the trip you have to ask for the help to many people (routers)  across the path.

Analogically routers would be the people you meet along the route. And the address would be Internet Protocol (IP).
What is a IP? the IP is address in the 3 layer  of osi model.
